Pysanky Eggs

Mar 16, 2012

What is that weird word up there? ^

I introduce you to the wonderful world of Pysanky eggs:
via
Pysanky eggs are hollow egg shells with detailed designs, made by putting wax over dye to preserve it, then melting it all off at the end.

Our family's cylinder of Pysanky eggs. Which one's your favorite?

How to make Pysanky eggs:

The egg, the yellow pump, the green poker-holer (does anyone know what it's called?)

1. Start with the egg, and put the green screwdriver on one end. Gently twist it, pushing harder and harder until it makes a perfect little hole
2. Take the pump and SLOWLY and GENTLY pump out the insides until the egg is completely empty

Now you have a hollow egg shell!

Pysanky decorating is covering eggs with hot wax to preserve the dye/color underneath. To 'draw' with wax on your egg, you will need the tool pictured:

No way am I ever that skilled to create such beautiful designs. My hand shakes so bad! Haha

I wanted to share with you an Easter egg with a short story on it. The words swirled down, then flipped around and curved up!

Notice that word, Galinda? That's from the musical Wicked - One of the best musicals ever!

I made little stars all over the place - it took a while.
Globe Easter egg! This is one of my favorites, but very difficult to transfer all those shapes from a map to an egg.

Strawberry egg! That was fun to make!
I love this 'wild growth' flower egg. I had the hardest time getting all the right colors!
Scribbling is great for kids and has an awesome outcome!

Mini Spring Easter Basket {from paper}

Mar 7, 2012

Based off of this pin here, I made a knock-off and came up with an Easter basket.
It is super easy and would make a great gift for a friend!

Supplies:
6x6 inch square of cardstock (mine's double-sided color)
Scoring tool
Glue
Pastel/'Spring color' ribbon (I got my cute green ribbon from here)
Pastel buttons
circle punch
Scissors

Score two inches in vertically. Then score four inches in. Once you've done one side, flip it around and do the other side.
 Cut into the scoring marks.
Now cut the two middles into a triangle and each end flap into thirds
Now fold each flap in, and fold the triangle up.
Glue the punched (or cut out) circle over the tip

Now do both sides and add a handle (I stitched mine on, but you could also glue it)
Voila!

I had a fun time taking photos of my basket....

Happy Wednesday!

Cookie Monster Valentine Treat Bag

Feb 12, 2012

I know people generally focus on the Valentines for V-Day. But isn't the bag/box that holds the valentines
important too? ;) I made this cute Cookie Monster Treat Bag that would also make just an adorable gift bag/goody bag!
 Let's get started:

Supplies:
1 dark blue gift bag
Glue
Black, white, and brow paper
Black marker

 Start with bag...
Glue on eyes (color white circles with marker), mouth (big, curved black paper shape), and cookie (partly folded brown circle with marker choco-chips).

You're done! That was easy!

Happy (two-day-early) Valentine's Day!

Nerd Monster Valentines

Feb 9, 2012

Hooray! Valentine's Day is almost here... and I have some super easy valentines to go with it!

Supplies:
Wonka Nerds boxes
Paper or craft foam
Tape
Glue
googly eyes (optional)

Start with some Nerd boxes...

Cover the box with paper and tape in the back
Glue on eyes and mouth. Now you can add a   To: From:   paper on the back.
Finished with the first monster!

Cookie Monster:
Cover with paper or foam (I only had blue craft foam in 'Cookie Monster' color)
Glue on eyes and mouth. Now make a cookie out of brown paper + marker. Fold one side down a bit and glue the flap to the mouth.

Done with monsters!
You can make monsters from any square candy - candy heart boxes for example.
Try testing out different characters: Spongebob squarepants would be easy (since he's square), other Sesame Street characters, or some animals (elephant, fish, dog, cat).
Happy Valentine's Day!!!
